• During summer the high traffic of trucks, tourist buses and private vehicles may cause delays of several hours in the crossing of the Strait of Magellan. Therefore, it is advisable to be prepared for this and to carry with you water, food and personal hygiene items in case you have to wait for many hours to cross the strait.
• There are long stretches of Route 3 without gas stations so it is important to have enough fuel to make the trip to the island.
• It is common for wildlife such as guanacos, foxes and rabbits to cross the road unexpectedly. To avoid accidents, pay attention and drive carefully.
• In autumn and winter it is necessary to take extreme precautions when driving in both Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. Strong winds and frost may cause traffic problems on the road. Vehicles should have winter tires and basic tools for emergency assistance.
