Tierra del Fuego has an history that dates back 10.000 years ago, when the native tribes inhabited the island. Some aspects of their cultural heritage have survived through oral tradition and art. In the city of Ushuaia, Bosque Yatana is a space where visitors can find an ancestral memory bounded with local history and nature. Located at the corner of Magallanes Av. and 25 de Mayo St. the place is just a short walk away from the town's centre.
Mónica Alvarado, a renowned artist born in Ushuaia, impulsed the creation of this reserve through the Cultivar Foundation, after a collective educative and cultural work that led to the preservation of this nature reserve. Nowadays this NGO takes care of the historical site. At the Casa Museo, the artist develops her project Arte x la Tierra, displaying in her work themes such as local history, the preservation of the native forest, and the ancestral cosmovision of America. In this regard, it's important to mention the work that the artist developed with the last native speaker of the Yagan language, Cristina Caledron, who died in the year 2022.
The Casa Museo, built in 1946 by Mónica Alvarado's grandparents, is a typical Patagonian wooden house. It has a reception and four small rooms with expositions of visual art, (paintings, embroidings, drawings and photography), as well as some historical documents.
Besides the Casa Museo, you can also visit the refuge located at the historical site where there is an exhibition of photography, items and art.
