Camping at the Heart of the Island
The "Corazón de la Isla" Natural Reserve is located in the center of the province, and has an approximate surface of 24700 acres. It has a diversity of landscapes made up of hills, valleys and lakes, among which Lake Yehuin, Lake Chepelmuth and Lake Y
This area is an ideal place for nature tourism and camping activities, both for the beauty of its surroundings and its fauna. The Reserve is the habitat of the guanaco and the red fox, a native species of Tierra del Fuego. It is also home to a great variety of birds, such as the Giant Woodpecker, the Common Goose, the Ruddy-headed Goose, the Black-headed Eagle, the Condor, the Black-necked Swan and the Boreal Bandurria.
It has a cold temperate climate and is comprised in the deciduous forest zone, consisting of two tree species that grow alone or associated in certain places: the Ñire (Nothofagus antartica) and the Lenga (Nothofagus pumilio), although other communities found and of importance in the reserve are the grasslands and peat bogs. Among the water courses that run through the reserve are Lake Yehuin, Lake Chepelmuth and Lake Yakush, which make up the basin of Lake Fagnano, the largest lake in the province.
Recreational tourism is planned throughout the reserve. In the vicinity of Lake Yakush there are three wild camping areas with fire pits for the use of visitors. It is important to remember that fires can only be made in authorized areas in order to avoid the risk of forest fires.
