Ski mountaineering or skimo, it´s an activity for experts skiers that combines mountain trekking with descents on areas with a good quality of snow. In Ushuaia there are three itineraries to choose, and all the trips are led by professional guides.
The first circuit is the mountain area of the Martial Glacier Natural Reserve, located at 7 kilometers from Ushuaia city center. From the parking lot, at the base of the old winter center, you must climb through the ski slope until you get to the heights of the valley. According to the quality of the snow you can choose to go towards Cañadón Negro or to the Martial Glacier. The return is made by the same route of ascent.
The second itinerary goes through the Olum Valley. Taking the National Route 3, you´ll get to a parking lot where the trail that leads to Laguna Esmeralda begins. The entry to the Olum Valley is on the opposite side of the road. Following this trail through the forest, you will get to the heights of the valley where your guides will choose the best descent route. Usually the descents are made following an East-West direction.
The last circuit is the Garibaldi Pass. From the parking lot next to the viewpoint, you must climb West towards the mountains of the valley. This area has many routes and spots to enjoy a good descent.
You can do ski mountaineering in Tierra del Fuego between the months of June and November, hiring the services of an authorized tourist operator.
